In the Shadow of Pittsburgh: Making Sense of Antisemitism (Sun. 17 Nov, 2019 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Curtis Library hosts “In the Shadow of Pittsburgh: Making Sense of Antisemitism,” a talk by Howard Solomon, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17. Registration not required.  For more information, please visit curtislibrary.com or contact the reference desk at 725-5242.

Howard Solomon is an artist, historian, and retired professor. For forty years, at Tufts, NYU, and USM, he taught courses on groups which were frequently relegated to the margins of historical memory; for his social activism in Maine, he has received lifetime achievement awards from Equality Maine and USM's Sampson Center for Diversity. Currently living in Maine but originally from Pennsylvania, Solomon was deeply affected by the attack upon a Pittsburgh synagogue in October 2018, and is eager to share his insight and perspective with others.

Please join us for a conversation about the history of antisemitism, what it looks like, why it exists, and what we can do about it.

‘Aging Well’ Lunch and Learn: Can You “Hear” Me Now? (Mon. 18 Nov, 2019 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm)

Debra Bare-Rogers, Disability Rights Maine (DRM), talks about Maine Relay Services, a free statewide service that connects voice telephone users with people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, have a speech disability, or are late-deafened. The service allows consumers to use special equipment (i.e. captioned telephone, TTY, VCO or HCO) and other resources (such as Sprint IP Relay) to communicate with standard voice telephone users. In addition to MAINE RELAY, DRM has a state program, called the Telecommunications Equipment Program (TEP), which was established by state law to provide ‘No’ or ‘Low’ cost adaptive telecommunications equipment to any Maine resident who cannot use their home’s conventional telephone due to a physical or cognitive disability.

Come hear all about this wonderful service. Bring your lunch, we’ll provide drinks, chips and dessert. Free, open to public. Call 729-0757 to register. People Plus is located at 35 Union Street, Brunswick.

People Plus is the Brunswick Area Senior Community Center and supports an engaged, healthy, and independent life for older adults, while joining others to build community for all ages. Dedicated to intergenerational community participation and support, we offer numerous choices for fitness and wellness services, recreation and learning opportunities, education and outreach and are home to the Brunswick Area Teen Center Program.
